The Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court in Cape Town became the target of violence on Saturday night when a group of residents stormed the premises, vandalized property, and set parts of the building on fire.

The attack on the courthouse occurred in the aftermath of the death of a local gang leader. According to the Bishop Lavis Community Policing Forum (CPF), tensions flared when news spread that the man had died while under questioning by the police’s Anti-Gang Unit.
Residents reportedly broke through the security gate, smashed windows, and set sections of the courthouse alight in what appeared to be retaliation.
Local sub-council chairperson Angus McKenzie explained that emotions ran high after the incident, but he emphasized that destroying state property was not the solution.

“The department is prioritizing emergency repairs to the damaged infrastructure, including restoring water supply and other essential services, to ensure that the court remains accessible and operational,” said departmental spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi.
The department condemned the vandalism and called for community members to assist in identifying those responsible.
Police Appeal for Cooperation
Authorities are urging residents of Bishop Lavis to come forward with information regarding the attack.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has promised to hold those involved accountable, with investigations into both the gang leader’s death and the courthouse attack underway.
Lindhorst expressed confidence that justice would prevail:
“SAPS is investigating it and will make sure that someone is held responsible for what has happened.”
