Eskom Chief Financial Officer, Calib Cassim, says the utility is spending billions on diesel just to keep the lights on.
He was speaking during a virtual media briefing on Thursday.
CEO Andre de Ruyter says while spending money on diesel is not ideal, diesel-fed gas turbines are important in producing enough power to meet peak demand in the evenings.
The power utility is sitting with debt close to R 400-billion.
