Bill Gates is stepping down from the board of Microsoft – He founded the company 40 years ago and built it into the massive corporation it is today – Along with his wife, he will be focusing on giving back to the world with his philanthropic pursuits.

40 years after founding Microsoft, Bill Gates will be stepping down from the board of the company as well as the board of Berkshire Hathaway, a conglomerate which is run by Warren E. Buffett, a close friend of Gates. “I have made the decision to step down from both of the public boards on which I serve — Microsoft and Berkshire Hathaway — to dedicate more time to philanthropic priorities including global health and development, education, and my increasing engagement in tackling climate change,” Mr Gates wrote in a LinkedIn post.

Gates was instrumental in cementing Microsoft’s position as the got to operating system used by most computers in the world, he was the face of the company, promoting and speaking at events. Gates is known for his savvy business tactics and his technical expertise which made him a formidable opponent in the computer industry. For years Gates has been stepping back from the company, in 2008 he left his day-to-day position and stepped down as chairman in 2018. It was at this time that he put more time into his philanthropic activities and founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with this wife. It has become one of the largest non-profit companies, fueled by the billions of dollars that Gates earned at Microsoft.

Gates is one of the largest individual holders of Microsoft stock, holding 100 million shares, roughly 1.3% of the total shares worth $16 billion according to the New York Times.

Microsoft was founded in 1975 after Gates dropped out of Harvard and teamed up with Paul Allen, his long time friend. Together they wrote a version of the BASIC programming language and used to run the early personal computers of the day, in their case, it was an Altair 8800. This language was later used to create the MS-DOS operating system, then Windows and the collection of office apps which we are all familiar with today.
