Helen Zille: DA within spitting distance of becoming biggest party in Gauteng

Democratic Alliance (DA) federal council chair Helen Zille said the future of South Africa will be either made or broken by the Gauteng election outcomes in next year’s general elections.

Zille was speaking at the DA Gauteng provincial congress in Boksburg, which will elect a leader who is likely to stand as its premier candidate in 2024.

Gauteng is the battleground, with several parties hoping to bring the African National Congress under 50%.

The governing party is currently holding onto power through a 50.19% win at the 2019 national polls.

Zille said her party’s frequent polling shows it’s possible for the DA to lead the province.

Zille said it does weekly polling ahead of the 2024 general polls, insisting that her party has made significant headway.

In spite of the DA only managing to get a 27% share of the votes in 2019, she believes it’s now set to get over 50% next year.

“There’s an English idiom that says we are in spitting distance, which means if you are standing behind someone and you spit, not far, just a little bit, you will hit them. And that is how close we are, to becoming the biggest party in Gauteng”.
