Petrol price is set decrease in October

The petrol price is set for a substantial decrease in October, with diesel costs set to plunge by almost R1 too. This light relief will be a welcome relief for the motorists of Mzansi over the coming weeks.

We’ve got a hat-trick to bring you. Petrol and paraffin are heading in the right direction, but diesel users will be the big winners in October:

Petrol: Decrease of 33 cents per litre
Diesel: Decrease of 93 cents per litre.
Paraffin: Decrease of 78 cents per litre.
Adding these totals to the September fuel price gives us the following average cost-per-litre for petrol and diesel in October. These predictions, from the Central Energy Fund, are forecast to come into effect from the middle of next week.

We have the Rand to thank, as strange as that may sound. The strength of ZAR against the US Dollar and other international currencies has a big say in dictating our petrol prices each month, and there was enough movement in September to shave a few cents off our current costs. However, the AA is warning of volatility ahead.

“The Rand’s daily average dipped as low as R16.10 to the US dollar on September 18, following a long downward trend which began in the first week of August. However, a steep jump to around R16.90 followed by a brief plateau and a further spike to nearly R17.20 caught watchers unawares.

“There is rightly some concern about the Rand’s short- to medium-term trajectory. Diesel and petrol prices spiked, and then pulled back before starting a further climb. If this trend of a weakening Rand and rising international fuel prices continues, it could be extremely negative for South African fuel users, and we will watch further changes with interest.
