Bheki Mlangeni Hospital still closed for repairs

The Bheki Mlangeni Hospital in Johannesburg remains closed after a fire broke out there this week.

It is still unclear what caused the blaze in the HR office on the second floor.

The incident is highly likely to cause a health backlog across Gauteng, as patients are diverted to other facilities for care.

A patient, who wants to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation, said she fled the blaze, terrified.

She’s since been discharged after being transported to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital first.

She described scenes of chaos as patients and nurses rushed to get out of the hospital.

The Gauteng Health Department said contractors are currently repairing the damage.

They are unable to confirm when the hospital will be functional again.
