Sewage spill leads to beach closure in Ballito

Thompson’s Bay Beach in Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal remains closed as a precautionary measure.

The water pumps at the beach were affected by an electricity outage, causing a sewage spill.

KwaDukuza Municipality says it’s conducting tests to ensure the water is safe before reopening the beach.

It’s hoped the beach will be reopened by Friday.

The municipality says it’s also looking at ways to prevent such occurrences from recurring in the future.

Municipal spokesperson Sipho Mkhize said: “One thing we realized is that the reason the diesel pumps gave up when we had a power outage was because the showers that we take on the sand…there is no flow where the water goes in and sand is left behind…it all goes in to the sewage…We found ourselves where we need to do improvements at Thompson beach…

“We’ve done water tests…we have taken samples again we are expecting results in 24 hours, we are hopeful they will come back positive which will mean the beach will be open possibly Thursday or Friday.”
