Basic Education Dept: No such thing as a 30% pass rate

The Basic Education Department says there is confusion between a pass mark and a pass rate.

It says there is no such thing as a 30% pass rate.

The department was responding to an uproar over the so-called thirty percent pass mark for matric pupils.

“There is no such thing as a 30% pass rate,” said Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga.

There are many things here that need to be explained and the first one is that people confuse what is called a pass mark with a pass rate so the pass rate is something else that is the aggregate result of learners in the country as announced by the minister to say in this year, the pass rate of 2021 is the following and that is what we are talking about and that is a separate issue altogether.”
