Bafana Bafana coach announces AFCON 2023 squad

Bafana Bafana Coach, Hugo Broos, names his 23-player squad for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. There are concerns about the availability of strikers.

The Belgian tactician trimmed his squad from the preliminary selection of 50 players on Thursday.

Familiar faces make up the squad but Broos dropped Lyle Foster who recently returned to competitive football with Burnley. There were also no places for Kaizer Chiefs players with the likes of goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma and defender Given Msimango dropped.

Orlando Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng paid for his lack of game-time as USA-based forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane was overlooked.

The biggest surprise was the omission of the Premier Soccer League joint top goal-scorer Khanysa Mayo while Broos preferred the Buccaneers duo of Zakhele Lepasa and Evidence Makgopa.

Polokwane City attacker Oswin Appollis and Jayden Adams of Stellenbosch were surprise inclusions as Lebo Mothiba has already been ruled out due to injury.
