Get the trains back on track, says SCOPA

Several train stations on Cape Town’s central line have not been operating for years due to the theft of essential infrastructure, illegal settlement on the railway lines, and vandalism.

The stations affected most include Khayelitsha, Nyanga Langa and Philippi.

Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts conducted its second site inspection this year to see if any progress has been made to get the trains back on track.

Prasa officials say they are making progress with contractors having been appointed as well as community engagements, using Khayelitsha train station as an example.

On Wednesday, SCOPA will be seeking answers from Prasa, the City of Cape Town, the Human Settlements Department, the National Development Agency, and the Public Works and Infrastructure Department on the relocation of illegal dwellers on the railway lines between Philippi and Langa.
