Competition Commission finds consumers continue to feel avian flu outbreak pinch

The Competition Commission says the effects of the avian flu outbreak over a year ago continue to be felt by consumers.

The commission released the latest edition of the Essential Food Pricing Monitoring report on Friday.

According to the report, the price of poultry products shot up when the outbreak crippled stock from producers, but prices have struggled to fall back to levels seen before the outbreak.

Producer prices for eggs reached R15 in June this year.

While prices remain high, an economist at the Competition Commission – Kagiso Zwane – says retailers have not fully passed on the higher producer prices.

“Retail prices have been fairly stable, considering higher producer prices. As expected, the increase at the producer level are much higher than at the retail level, and that’s because the cost of containing the outbreak are contained at the producer level and not at the retail level.”
