Auditor General recovers R1.29 bln in taxpayers’ money from Govt irregularities

The office of the Auditor General says it has managed to recover about R1.29 billion of taxpayers’ money identified as material irregularities from various government departments and entities. The AG’s office was briefing the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture in Parliament in what it calls a committee induction session.

The AG’s office says they have discovered about 266 of these material irregularities for the period under review. It says this money covers the period starting from 2019 up to 2023 when it started the implementation of correcting material irregularities in the public purse. Poor internal controls and payments were the main cause of non-compliance with the relevant legislation.

“We note that there was a financial loss that has been recovered to the tune of one point two billion and half a billion of financial loss was actually prevented with the material irregularities we raised. And the financial loss in the process of being recovered is currently as R700 million,” explains Omphemetse Setebe from the Auditor General’s Office.
