IEC CEO says ActionSA should have appealed the matter

The IEC isn’t impressed by Action SA’s plan to run to the courts.

The party is considering legal action against the Commission because draft ballot papers for wards in Gauteng contain only the logo of ActionSA, not its name.

The party says this will limit voters from identifying its candidates.

ActionSA did not register their acronym.

IEC chief electoral officer, Sy Mamabolo says the party should not place blame but rather find a way to appeal the matter.

Mamabolo said, “ActionSA elected not to register an acronym, other parties have registered acronyms and we use those for the wards’ registered ballots. This is not an arbitrary decision, it is intended to ensure that we fit everything within the constraints of the size of the ballots, as well as, using the identifiers submitted by the parties.”

The CEO said the party elected not to register the acronym and should have followed procedures for amending the ballots.
