Thabo Mbeki says he spoke to De Klerk on apartheid utterances

Former President Thabo Mbeki says he’s spoken to FW de Klerk about his utterances about apartheid.

Mbeki says De Klerk told him that he didn’t know the United Nations had declared apartheid a crime against humanity.

“I had a brief discussion with him, I asked him about that, what transpired is that he actually did not know that there is a convention declaring apartheid a crime against humanity.”

There’s been an uproar about De Klerk’s denial that apartheid was such a crime.

Meanwhile, the ANC has condemned statements made by De Klerk about apartheid.

It’s called them a ‘blatant whitewash’.

The ANC is asking the government to criminalise such denials.
