BOSA launches online petition calling for Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga’s removal

Mere hours before Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is due to announce the official matric results for 2023, Build One South Africa (BOSA) is calling for her head.

Motshekga has been the minister of this portfolio for 15 years.

BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane said she’s failed to deliver quality education that is market-relevant and globally competitive.

The movement has launched an online petition with a target of 50,000 signatures calling for her removal.

At last check, it’s reached more than half that number.

“The indicators are such that our young people are unemployed. The majority of them will finish school to be unemployable. We have a government that insists that our young people pass at 30%, which does not prepare them for any world of work.”

Maimane said it was time Motshekga resigned because the quality of South African education was determined on affordability.

“Ultimately, we need to scrap the pass mark of 30% and ensure that our kids can compete at 50% so that we can ensure that they are competent and can compete with any one in the world.”

He added that Motshekga had been unable to stem the high number of school dropouts during her tenure.
