Cabinet wants Andre de Ruyter to start at Eskom sooner

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has been asked by the Cabinet to ensure Eskom’s new CEO Andre De Ruyter starts sooner. De Ruyter is due to start at Eskom on 15 January 2020. He is tasked with getting Eskom out of the energy crisis it’s currently facing.
“Cabinet fully supports all efforts meant to ensure electricity supply certainty in our country. In this regard, Cabinet has mandated Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan to negotiate with the Chief Executive Officer Mr Andre de Ruyter to commence his duties earlier than the set date,” said Minister in the Presidency, Jackson Mthembu. Mthembu was briefing the media on the outcomes of the Cabinet briefing.
The embattled Eskom began rolling power cuts in the beginning of December, which led to Stage 6 load-shedding for the first time. Eskom blamed this on sabotage. Mthembu said de Ruyter will deal with issues at Eskom.
“Mr de Ruyter together with his management team will immediately deal with the concerning issues of governance, lack of financial management as well as stablise the operation of Eskom. This includes dealing with the huge backlog of maintenance of the aging fleet of their power stations and the structural defects in Medupi and Kusile power stations,” added Mthembu. The National Treasury has allocated R59-billion to Eskom over the next two years.
