The African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Gertrude Shope will celebrate her 99th birthday on Thursday. Shope, who is one of the oldest members of the party, is a former trade unionist and the first Women’s League President

Shope’s daughter Lyndoll, who left the ANC and joined the Congress of the People (COPE) says her mother taught them to be independent and always reminded them that people must be allowed to exercise their right to choose.
“Thank you very much for showing us what democracy means…that is what democracy is and you supported my decision.” The former Deputy President, Dr Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka says it is important for women in South Africa to learn from women who contributed to the liberation of South Africa.
Mlambo-Ngcuka says Shope led by example. “MamGerty has been a true leader to all of us…so we salute her for that role she played for having nurtured the young women who became ministers, doctors, lawyers.
