Disappointing video of ANC members celebrating the release of Councillor accused of rape – Watch
The unnamed ANC councillor paid R2 000 to secure his temporary release from police custody – but those supporting the rape suspect have been slammed.
A prominent ANC councillor was granted R2 000 bail on Monday, after he was accused of raping his girlfriend during the Christmas holidays. The suspect a – party branch executive member of Zone 13 in Alexandra – has not yet been named, but the show of support for the alleged sexual offender is likely to leave a sour taste in many mouths.
RAPE-ACCUSED COUNCILLOR GRANTED TEMPORARY FREEDOM
Greater Johannesburg ANC secretary Dada Morero issued a statement over the weekend, declaring his branch’s support for the victim. This clashed with the ANC Youth League’s stance, as they believe their ‘comrade’ is innocent. More specifically requested that no supporters turn up at the court today – but his pleas fell on deaf ears:
The ANC stands with the victim and calls on law enforcement agencies to ensure that the alleged misogynist faces the full might of the law as we believe in the fairness … of the justice system of our country. No ANC regalia should be worn by anyone who will go to court to support the alleged perpetrator. Ours is to support the victim until justice is done.”

CALLS TO SUSPEND ANC COUNCILLOR IN JOBURG INTENSIFY
As well as being morally dubious, the gathering seems to contravene Level 3 lockdown laws. The local opposition has also expressed their dismay – DA Johannesburg spokesperson on Gender & the LGBTQIA+, Botshelo Moloisane, says that the councillor in question must be suspended without pay ‘until the case has concluded’:
“We are saddened and shocked to learn about the arrest, this comes at a time where the country is battling GBV and femicide. It is appalling that the accused has acted in such a manner.”
“We will ask the Joburg council to write to MEC Lebogang Maile to suspend the councillor without pay until the case is concluded. Not only has he broken his oath of office to but his code of conduct as an elected councillor.
