Amnesty International concerned by spike in death penalty executions

Amnesty International has expressed concern over what it calls a spike in death penalty executions around the world, including in the US. It has deemed recent executions across five states in the US, a disturbing resurgence of capital punishment, saying it revealed deep systemic flaws and racial injustices.

Shenilla Mohamed is the Executive Director at Amnesty International, “In countries where the death penalty is implemented, there seems to be an increase. In 2023, executions more than tripled in Sub-Saharan Africa and global executions have soared to the highest number in almost a decade. There was a spike recorded in Iran, Sub-Saharan Africa recorded an increase by 66 percent and Somalia was the only country known to have carried out executions in Southern Africa.

Definitely we’re seeing a spike and this is really concerning because as Amnesty International we have been fighting against the death penalty because we do believe that no one, including any government, has a right to take away anyone’s life.
