Amcu expects thousands at Marikana massacre memorial

Tuesday marks 10 years since police opened fire on striking miners in Marikana in the North West. A total of 34 people were killed and almost 80 sustained serious injuries. At least 10 others, including police officers, were killed in protest-linked violence leading up to the tragedy.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) says 10 years is a long time and people should have been arrested.

The union is expecting 25,000 people to attend Tuesday’s commemoration of the Marikana massacre.
Amcu regional secretary Phutumani Manyathi said the union is working with the police, the local municipality and emergency personnel to ensure Tuesday’s event is a success.
