Ambulance carrying patients crashes, kills 3 & injures 24

Patients heading to hospital for medical help never reached their destination.

The health department bus apparently veered down an embankment on the R600 and crashed on Monday.

It was travelling from Winterton in the Drakensberg region to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital.

One woman died at the scene. Two others, a man and a woman, were dead on arrival at the hospital, while 24 sustained injuries.

When paramedics and cops arrived at the scene of the accident, some of the injured patients were lying on the side of the road while others were still trapped inside the bus, trying to get out. The lifeless body of the woman was discovered lying next to the bus while paramedics were helping the injured.

Health spokeswoman Ncumisa Mafunda said: “As a result of the accident that involved 27 passengers, one person died on the scene and two others, a man and a woman, were certified dead upon arrival at the hospital.”

She said seven of the injured are still in hospital.

Cops spokeswoman Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed that an ambulance transporting patients allegedly lost control and overturned along the R600 highway towards Spioenkop dam.

“One patient died at the scene and another died in hospital on arrival.

“A case of culpable homicide was opened at Winterton Police Station.”

Mbele said the dead people have not been identified yet.
