Alexandra Total Shutdown protesters have promised not to harm any foreign nationals in Wednesday’s demonstrations.
Shutdown committee member Sandile Mavundla said no one will instigate xenophobia.
Protesters blocked all exit and entry points into the township.
Residents have called on City of Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba and Gauteng Premier David Makhura to meet with them to discuss grievances.
They claim illegal structures are being occupied by foreigners.
The Gauteng government said that it was sending senior officials to the area.
Meanwhile, the JMPD has been deployed to the area to monitor the situation.
JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the situation in Alexandra is tense.
“We are currently monitoring the situation,” said Minnaar.
“There are more burning tyres inside of Alex.”
Minnaar said two protesters were arrested because of the “violent nature” of the protest.
