Lockdown Level 3: President Cyril Ramaphosa agrees schools must be safe

President Cyril Ramaphosa says government agrees with parents, teachers and governing bodies that no school should reopen until all necessary precautions are in place. The president’s comment comes hours after government made an eleventh-hour about-turn on the reopening of schools.

Grade sevens and twelves were expected back in class on Monday. However, unions and school governing bodies raised concerns about school readiness. Writing in his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa admits key roleplayers are entitled to information about the state of preparedness of each school to ensure a safe learning environment.
