COVID-19: AfriForum heads to court over forced quarantine

Lobby group AfriForum has launched a pre-emptive strike against possible plans by government to enforce a quarantine on all people who test positive for COVID-19. Last week, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said patients with the disease will be admitted to isolation facilities even if they do not show any symptoms.
That’s as KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zihle Zikalala also threatened last month that self-isolation was coming to an end. President Cyril Ramaphosa poured cold water on the plans, saying this approach is still to be discussed at the National Coronavirus Command Council.
But current regulations already empower government to isolate people against their will. AfriForum says forced quarantine will violate several Constitutional rights, including the right to human dignity and freedom. It argues the regulations give overly broad powers to authorities.
The matter has been filed in court to be heard urgently. Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday. Help protect your loved ones by sharing this official South African government COVID-19 service with your family, friends and community.
