AFCON Finals: Zimbabwe’s Warriors ready to face Senegal

AFCON Finals: Warriors ready to face Senegal although there is uncertainty. Zimbabwe faces a possible FIFA ban after the Sports Recreation Commission (SRC), a government body, suspended the elected Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) board and ignored a 3 January ultimatum to reinstate the suspended officials.

The Warriors face Senegal tomorrow in a Group B opener at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Cameroon under a cloud of uncertainty.

The ban is yet to materialise and FIFA has said nothing in public since the deadline for the SRC to reinstate the ZIFA board elapsed.

The Zimbabwe delegation in Cameroon on Sunday told The NewsHawks that the Warriors are champing at the bit to face the Lions of Teranga. Said a member of the delegation:

Zimbabwe is going to play Senegal tomorrow. We have had meetings and arranged logistics for the match. So it’s all systems go now despite the FIFA issue. We are ready for the match and the team is in high spirits raring to go.

ZIFA acting chief executive Xolisani Gwesela concurred. He said:

We are ready for Senegal tomorrow. The boys are in good mood and we hope for positive results. All the best to the indefatigable and brave Warriors. The 2021 AFCON finals roared into life this Sunday, with hosts Cameroon emerging 2-1 victors over Burkina Faso this evening.

Burkina Faso scored in the 24th minute through Gustavo Sangara but the hosts responded by scoring twice in the first half. Vincent Aboubakar netted twice from the penalty spot (40′), (45+3′).
