City of Cape Town says national govt should offer additional interventions after Dunoon fire

The City of Cape Town has said two hundred families affected by a fire at Ethembeni informal settlement will not be provided with rebuilding materials citing budget constraints.

The families were displaced by a raging fire that broke out in Dunoon this week.

An estimated 70 structures were completely destroyed by fire this week.

The city attributed the inability to help the victims with rebuilding materials to its reduced fiscal budget.

It added that necessary interventions to assist the affected individuals were executed.

Meanwhile, it has also said it’s the call of the national government to declare a national disaster and assist with extra interventions such as fire kits.

The municipality had clarified in the past that disaster status can only be declared when the total number of affected victims reaches 1000.
