Actress Ayanda Borotho says she misses the days when Ubuntu was something that everyone showed to others. She says people have lost how they used to live, their roots, and it’s not a good thing.
Ayanda Borotho was recently embarrassed to admit she doesn’t know anything of her neighbours who have lived next to her for four years. She says it’s because people have abandoned their roots – they do not show real Ubuntu anymore. Sharing a recent incident on Instagram, the Isibaya actress said she missed the days when neighbours really helped each other during times of need.
Ayanda remembered a time when Ubuntu was an everyday thing. Part of her post read: “I remember a time when we greeted strangers and they greeted back. I’m often taken aback by people who give me strange stares when I greet them standing in the queue at the shops.
I miss the days when our neighbours were family we knew and loved that would come to switch on the lights for us at night when we went to emakhaya.” “This ‘staying in your lane’ that has uprooted our ubuntu bethuna. Can we just go back to being our African selves? We would see less of the ills we are faced with….nje.
