President Cyril Ramaphosa applauds media for informing the public about COVID-19

President Cyril Ramaphosa has applauded the media for their pivotal role in informing the public about COVID-19. He was speaking during an engagement with South African National Editor’s Forum (Sanef) on Sunday.

“Through the media’s reporting on the disease, you have really helped to inform and empower the people of our country but you have also stimulated public debate. Much more importantly you have helped to promote accountability and to hold those of us who are in position of power to account,” he said.

There are 1,727 new COVID-19 cases in South Africa. This brings the total number of positive coronavirus cases to 30,967. There are now 32 more COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the total number to 643. According to the Health Department, a total of 701,883 tests have been conducted cumulatively of which 21,708 tests have been conducted since the last report. More than 16,116 people have recovered, resulting in more than 52-percent recovery.
