Outa to challenge AARTO demerit system

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse is again threatening to take the government to court over the new AARTO demerit system due to be implemented in June.

Outa says the system is flawed and open to corruption.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s renewed AARTO legislation promises harsh penalties for those who flout the rules of the road.

“The Act promotes responsible behaviour on our roads through the creation of a demerit system, which introduces meaningful consequences for reckless, negligent and inconsiderate conduct,” Ramaphosa said.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says he’ll lead an education campaign on the legislation.

“We are going to intensify education in terms of AARTO, we are going to do that in the next coming months in all the spaces where people travel, we are going to intensify that work,” Mbalula said.

Ramaphosa has also introduced the revamped Arrive Alive programme, which aims to reduce deaths over the next 12 months.
