95 Libyans arrested in Mpumalanga at secret military camp to appear in court

Ninety-five Libyan nationals arrested in Mpumalanga at a secret military camp will appear in the White River Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

They were handcuffed during a massive police operation last week for running an illegal military training base.

It’s understood that they obtained their visas fraudulently and entered South Africa through Tunisia.

Meanwhile, the Independent Policing Union Of South Africa (IPUSA) said there’s a need for urgent reforms in the policing sector as the country battles rampant crime.

The union’s president, Bethuel Nkuna, said the country’s law enforcement agencies have shown a failure to prevent lawlessness.

“These are repetitive trends: if we can remember the July 2021 unrest, the July 2022 mass shooting of people at their places of entertainment, and also the July 2023 torching of trucks.”
