City of Cape Town passes halfway mark of 72-hour water infrastructure maintenance project
The City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, says they have officially passed the halfway mark on day one of the city’s proposed three-day water shutdown.
Teams are completing a major water maintenance project, which has left 33 areas in the southern suburbs including Grassy Park, Steenberg, Marina Da Gama, Lavender Hill, Plumstead, and Wynberg without water.
Water tankers have been stationed at 11 locations through the affected region.
Badroodien says the progress has been amazing.
“Teams have worked around the clock to replace five out of six valves. We were able to score an additional valve on top of the originally planned five valves which now sees five out the six valves replaced successfully.”
Badroodien says final adjustments are now being made to the remaining pipes.
“Within the next few hours, we should start to see our tams stress test the new valves as well the pipes as water begins to refill these particular networks.”
Badroodien thanked the public for their patience, saying he’s looking forward to more positive updates on Wednesday.
