A four-year-old boy was found wandering the streets of Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, around 10pm recently, sparking concern among local residents. When approached, the child revealed he was too afraid to return home, alleging that his parents had assaulted him over accusations of theft.
Alarmed by the situation, community members escorted the boy back to his home. There, his mother reportedly claimed that R1,500 had gone missing and accused her son of stealing the money. Shocked by visible burns and other injuries on the child’s body, residents immediately contacted the police.

Upon further questioning, the mother allegedly admitted to physically assaulting her son. Both parents — Mozambican nationals — were arrested and appeared in the Daveyton Magistrates Court in April 2025. Their next court appearance is scheduled for June 2025.
The incident has provoked outrage in the Daveyton community. Local leader Jane Magagula condemned the abuse, calling for a harsh sentence for the parents.

“It’s hard to believe a four-year-old could steal such a large amount of money — and for what purpose?” Magagula said. “Neighbours told us this wasn’t the first time the child had been mistreated. He was clearly traumatised, even afraid to speak to us.”
Magagula stressed that the community would not tolerate such abuse and demanded justice for the young victim. Another resident, Zanele Mahlangu, echoed those sentiments.
“This is heartbreaking. That boy is going to carry this pain for years. His own mother, who should be his protector, is the one hurting him. We want justice.”
Police spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela confirmed that both parents were taken into custody and charged in connection with the alleged abuse. The child has since been removed from the home and is now under the care of social workers.
