Up to 370 people have been arrested around Durban since Thursday. This, after Police Minister, Bheki Cele, joined a festive safety operation in the City. The operation is to ensure people are safe this holiday.
The operations included a late-raid, targeting known crime hotspots.
According to Cele, out of all the arrests, 14 are for murder, a further 14 for sexual offences, 92 are for assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH), 8 are for housebreaking. They have arrested many others for other crimes, including kidnapping.
The minister also checked if lockdown regulations were being compiled with. The non-compliance is really high,” says Cele.
Cele also made a stop at a house were five people between the ages of four and 32 were killed on Friday.
It is alleged that unknown gunmen entered the house and opened fire. One person has been taken in for questioning.
