3 suspects arrested in Cape Town for attempting to sell uncut diamonds! Western Cape police have arrested three suspects who were allegedly caught in the act while attempting to sell uncut diamonds in Cape Town. The suspects, aged between 50 and 52, were apprehended during an undercover police operation in Elsies River, following a tip-off about an illegal diamond deal.
The trio is expected to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates Court soon on charges of illegal possession of uncut diamonds and fraud.
Police Sting Operation
Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk, confirmed that the suspects were arrested by members of the SAPS Flying Squad, who had received intelligence about a planned illegal transaction.
“The members operationalised the information and attended to the identified address. Upon arrival, they spotted the potential suspects,” said Van Wyk.
The suspects were reportedly in the process of selling four uncut diamonds when the officers intervened just in time to foil the transaction.
Items Seized by Police
Following the arrests, the police confiscated several items, including:
- Four uncut diamonds with an estimated value of R60,000
- A diamond tester used to verify the authenticity of the gems
The three suspects were immediately detained at Elsies River police station, where they are currently being held pending their court appearance.
Authorities Take a Stand Against Illicit Diamond Trade
The illegal diamond trade remains a serious issue in South Africa, a country known for its rich diamond reserves. Authorities continue to clamp down on illegal mining and diamond smuggling, which not only affects the economy but also funds organized crime.
The Western Cape police have reiterated their commitment to curbing such crimes, ensuring that offenders face the full might of the law.
“Our officers remain vigilant in tackling crimes related to the illegal diamond trade, ensuring that criminals are brought to justice,” said Van Wyk.
Separate Operation Seizes Over 5,800 Illicit Tobacco Products
In another law enforcement success, the Western Cape Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Policing Team, in collaboration with the Provincial Anti-Economic Crimes Task Team, conducted an operation targeting counterfeit goods.
The operation took place in the Bellville central business district and focused on shops suspected of selling illicit tobacco products.
Large Haul of Illegal Tobacco Seized
During the operation, police confiscated:
- 5,861 illicit tobacco products
- Estimated street value of R250,135
The items were found in various shops selling counterfeit and smuggled cigarettes, which are often untaxed and unregulated.
Two Foreign Nationals Arrested
As a result of the operation, two foreign nationals aged 24 and 44 were arrested and detained at the Bellville police station. They now face charges related to the illegal sale of tobacco products.
Authorities have warned that trading in counterfeit goods is a serious offense that affects businesses, consumers, and the economy.
Crackdown on Economic Crimes
The Western Cape police have been intensifying efforts to combat economic crimes, which include:
- Illicit trade in diamonds and precious metals
- Counterfeit goods, including tobacco and alcohol
- Smuggling and tax evasion
Operations such as these highlight the effectiveness of intelligence-driven policing and multi-agency collaboration in fighting crime.
Community Urged to Report Illegal Activities
Law enforcement agencies have called on community members to play their part by reporting suspicious activities related to the illegal diamond trade, counterfeit goods, and economic crimes.
Anyone with information on such crimes is urged to contact their local police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
The recent arrests in Elsies River and Bellville underscore the commitment of the Western Cape police to ensuring criminal networks are dismantled and offenders face justice.
