Three suspects were arrested by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in connection with fraudulent roadworthy certificates, police said on Thursday
Hawks spokesperson Captain Philani Nkwalase said the trio was arrested on Wednesday, with assistance from the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public works.
“The trio, aged between 31 and 41, were arrested after the team descended at a small town of Grabouw, clamping down on crime in search of unroadworthy vehicles.”
Nkwalase said that, during the joint operation, three vehicles, which previously failed the mandatory roadworthy tests in March by the provincial traffic department, were suspended.
“The vehicles were deemed not fit to be operated on public roads until all the identified defects were fixed. Despite the prohibition the vehicles were alleged to be fraudulently certified roadworthy at the later stage.”
The trio are expected to appear at the Bellville Magistrates court on Thursday where they face charges of fraud.
