2023 matrics reign supreme after braving COVID-19 in their journey

The matric class of 2023 is being celebrated for prevailing despite hiccups such as the COVID-19 pandemic during their high school journey.

This group has obtained an historic 82,9% pass rate, making them the first to obtain such a high rate since 1994.

Most of the pupils had to be accustomed to new of ways of teaching and learning during hard lockdowns for about three years.

University of Stellenbosch University’s education expert professor Mbulu Madiba says they should be commended.

“This is the class that some of them were in grade 9 and other grade 10 in 2021 just after COVID-19…We really have to commend the learners, they achieved against all odds.”

Meanwhile, some pupils have gathered at their schools to get their statements of their matric results.

Pupils from Northcliff High School say they have given the nation something to celebrate, likening their historic pass rate to the Springbok’s Rugby World Cup victory.

The school in the north of Johannesburg boasts a 97% matric pass rate.

Pupils there said what they were able to achieve during the COVID-19 pandemic – which disrupted the education system – is the benchmark for agility and resilience.
