The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure is urging motorists to be cautious when approaching the N1 northbound near Sable Road in Century City following the closure of two lanes in the area.
The department said the flooding on the N1 was due to the wetland in the rail reserve close to Century City that had reached capacity during this past week’s heavy rains.
According to the provincial Infrastructure Department, the stormwater drain system in the area can’t drain the water fast enough, resulting in multiple lane closures.
“Outbound lanes are less affected. Despite warning signs and lanes merging to one lane, road users are not reducing their speed,” said the department’s spokesperson, Jandré Bakker.
“We urge road users to slow down and factor in additional travel time, especially ahead of Monday’s peak morning traffic. While we are hopeful that fewer lane closures will be in place as water drains, there’s still a real likelihood of lane closures over the next few days.”
