Here is the List of the 18 schools with a 0% matric pass rate

The hall of shame has extended this year. More schools have ended up on the 0% matric pass rate list, with half of the offending institutions based in Limpopo.

Despite South Africa breaking its combined pass rate in 2019 (81.3%), the matric results weren’t comprehensively brilliant across the board. There are 18 schools which failed to chalk-up any successful exam outcomes – that’s six more with a “0% score” than registered in 2018.

Matric results – the best and worst of South Africa

Eight of the nine South African provinces saw an increase in their overall pass rates. However, complacency seems to have got the better of Gauteng. The most densely-populated region in South Africa was the only province to show a decline, and in turn, conceeded its spot at the top of the table.

Free State is now the best performing province by pass rate. The top three is completed by a resurgent North West, who saw a massive improvement of 5.6% to climb up the standings. Western Cape has to settle for fourth, whereas KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga managed to smash the 80% barrier.

Limpopo takes the wooden spoon

However, Limpopo – despite making a noticeable improvement – finished ninth in the battle of the provinces. They are also the region with the highest number of “0% pass rate schools”. Nine institutions – and their 65 students – didn’t register a single successful matric exam this year.

The other 50% of schools with a zero-achievement record are based in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. A number of factors have contributed to these eye-watering matric results, but ultimately, the buck has to stop somewhere in our education system: Here are the main offenders…

What can I do if I failed my exams?

HAVE ANOTHER GO: A Grade 12 student may opt to redo their entire year so that they can improve all of their matric results. This is a good option for those learners who did not perform well enough to qualify for studying towards their chosen qualification. If you only need to improve in one of two areas, you also can enroll on a part-time basis for 1-6 subjects.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING: Not about that school life? You can undertake courses in office management, childcare, small business management, and hospitality and catering services without a matric qualification.

DO A BRIDGING COURSE: A bridging course is a short period of learning you can undertake in the summer, through your school or another local education venue. It literally helps you prove that you have ‘bridged the gap’ in your knowledge, and completion can result in an upgrade of your final marks or even a ‘pre-degree’ certification. Now wouldn’t that look good on a university application?
