Eastern Cape police launch manhunt after 12 prisoners escape custody

Twelve prisoners have escaped from the Mount Frere Police Station in the Eastern Cape. Police have implemented their 72-hour activation plan to catch the escapees. They are wanted for a range of violent crimes including rape and robbery.

Police say in the early hours of the morning, officers discovered a hole in the cell wall during their patrol. A perimeter fence was also cut.

Authorities are warning the public not to approach the criminals or assist in harbouring them.
