10 man Maritzburg United holds Kaizer Chiefs

The Team of Choice, who looked lively early on, almost opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a chance at the back post after some brilliant attacking play but Bandile Shandu could not capitalise.

Kaizer Chiefs were held to a goalless draw by Maritzburg United, who secured their first point in the Absa Premiership this season. The hosts were reduced to ten men in the 16th minute after Siphesihle Ndlovu received a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Siyabonga Ngezana.

In the 22nd minute, Khama Billiat should have sent Amakhosi ahead after being set up inside the box, but he scuffed his shot and United goalkeeper Richard Ofori made the save.

Chiefs could not get into any sort of passing rhythm still after half-an-hour with the Team of Choice not giving them time and space on the ball.

However, Giovanni Solinas’ charges were beginning to gain attacking momentum five minutes before the break but clear-cut chances were hard to come by as the sides went into the break goalless.

Amakhosi were creating chances ten minutes into the second stanza but were over elaborating on the ball in the last third, much to the frustration of the Chiefs supporters.

Daniel Cardoso almost broke the deadlock for the Glamour Boys 20 minutes before time with a long-range strike that was searching for the top corner but eventually sailed narrowly wide.

Siphiwe Tshabalala went close to finding the breakthrough for Amakhosi ten minutes before but Ofori made a good save to deny the veteran winger in the box.

Chiefs were being frustrated in the closing stages of the half as Maritzburg held on to claim their first point of the Absa Premiership campaign.

The AmaKhosi, meanwhile, are yet to register a single win this campaign.
