Wits University says it has set aside about R30 million to assist financially excluded students to register for the 2024 academic year.
The Wits Hardship Fund is an initiative established to help eligible students owing the institution more than R10,000 to secure their spot in the university.
Thousands of undergraduate students across the country are blocked from enrolling for the current academic year due to outstanding fees.
Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel said the fund was established to assist the so-called missing middle.
“We received a total of 1,037 applications and about 700 of those have been approved. The university has also started a discretionary fund, and this is where we try to match up donors with students who require funding.”
