2 fires continue to rage in the Western Cape

After five days of multiple wildfires wreaking havoc in the Overstrand and Cape Winelands, two fires are still raging out of control.

In the Overstrand, a blaze in Pringle Bay that prompted an evacuation earlier this week has been contained, but a fire threatening the Buffelsjag and Pearly Beach areas remains a concern.

In the Cape Winelands, three fires – including one that raged for 11 days – scorched more than 30,000 hectares of vegetation.

Cape Winelands municipality spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto said one of the three fires is still raging on the Brandvlei mountains.

Firefighters in Kluitjieskraal, Wolseley battled a blaze for almost two weeks before eventually containing it on Thursday night.

Another fire in Fairy Glen, Worcester is also under control after raging for six days.

Otto said no damage to infrastructure has been reported.

Meanwhile, in Overstrand Mayor Annelie Rabie said firefighters are determined to extinguish the fire in Buffelsjag and Pearly Beach.

“The municipal manager has authorized the use of helicopters and bombers so we are now bringing that in to try and kill the fires.”

Rabie said there has been no damage to property and more than 6,500 hectares of vegetation has been burnt to date.
