I was a functioning addict: Wendy Williams on her drug addiction

Wendy Williams recently opened up about her battle with drug addiction and how she was a “functioning addict”.

In an interview on Entertainment Tonight, the American talk show host got extremely candid about her battle with drug addiction while she was still a radio presenter.

Wendy claimed that she was a “functioning addict”, which allowed her to maintain good ratings for the radio station and in turn keep her job, even though her employers at the time knew about her addiction problem.

I was a functioning addict though, I would report to work on time and I walked in and all of my coworkers, and including my bosses, would know,” explained Wendy.

“But instead of firing me, you see, I would grab my headphones and arrogantly walk into the studio and dare they fire me because I was making ratings.”

The 54-year-old daytime talk show host, who made headlines earlier this year shortly after she announced she’d be taking leave from her show, said that she wasn’t embarrassed to openly talk about her past experiences with drug addiction – and went as far as saying that being a functioning drug addict allowed her to stay organised.

Even though Wendy’s reckless days of drug doing are behind her, she still thinks it was a miracle she was able to stop and make it past that period of her life.

“[A] functioning addict has several alarm clocks, you’re organised. It’s a miracle I was able to stop,” she said.

In collaboration with Hunter Foundation, Wendy is now using her story to launch the “Be there” campaign in an attempt to support others who might still be struggling with drug and substance abuse.
