Nine police officers were injured while responding to an attack on a councillor in Umzinto on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.
At least six vehicles were damaged, when the community turned on the officers.
They are apparently unhappy with a candidate for the local government elections.
Police spokesperson Vish Naidoo says police have opened multiple criminal cases.
