Wits lifts R10 000 upfront fee

The University of the Witwatersrand has lifted the R10,000 upfront fee that students need to pay before moving into their accommodation.

The university says some of the decisions had to be taken, even though they will cost the institution.

Violent protests erupted at the university’s Braamfontein campus, with students protesting the lack of accommodation and a change in the registration process.

“We haven’t been able to negotiate with NSFAS but talks are underway,” said Wits spokesperson, Shirona Patel.

“We have emergency beds, anyone sleeping in the library, we ask security to bring them forward,” she added.
