Trump Criticises Ukraine Again as Geneva Peace Talks Continue

US President Donald Trump has once more ignited controversy with sharp remarks aimed at Ukraine, accusing the country’s leadership of showing “zero gratitude” for Washington’s military and financial support during its ongoing war with Russia. Trump’s latest comments were posted on Sunday, coinciding with crucial diplomatic talks in Geneva where senior American and Ukrainian representatives gathered to discuss a proposal aimed at halting the conflict. The statement immediately drew widespread reaction, raising further questions about Trump’s stance toward the war and his relationship with longstanding US allies.
The conflict in Ukraine, triggered when Russia launched a full-scale invasion in 2022, has led to devastating losses and the destruction of vast regions. Despite this, Trump’s messaging has continued to focus less on condemning Moscow and more on demanding what he considers proper recognition from Kyiv for US intervention. His remarks reflect an ongoing pattern in which he criticises Ukraine’s leadership, US allies, and his predecessor Joe Biden, while offering only muted disapproval of Russia’s aggressive actions.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared in capital letters that Ukraine’s leadership had shown no appreciation for the United States’ efforts in supporting the embattled nation. “UKRAINE ‘LEADERSHIP’ HAS EXPRESSED ZERO GRATITUDE FOR OUR EFFORTS,” he wrote, framing the war as a “HUMAN CATASTROPHE” while simultaneously attacking Biden for what he claimed was reckless and unnecessary assistance to Kyiv.
Although Trump expressed sympathy for the human toll of the war, he stopped short of directly condemning Russia’s invasion. Instead, his post focused heavily on criticising Biden—whom he habitually refers to as “crooked Joe”—for providing Ukraine with weapons “free, free, free.” Trump also blasted European nations for continuing to buy Russian oil, arguing that such trade undermines any credibility their support for Ukraine claims to have.
Trump’s rhetoric once again highlighted his longstanding grievance that the United States is giving too much and receiving too little in global conflicts. His comments were also interpreted as part of a broader effort to appeal to Republican voters who feel weary of the war’s financial burden.
Trump’s War Stance Sparks Controversy Within His Own Party
Trump has repeatedly claimed that he could negotiate an end to the war within 24 hours, a promise he frequently used during his presidential campaign. Yet since returning to the White House, his actual attempts at diplomacy have made little progress. His administration is now evaluating a 28-point peace plan that is being discussed in Geneva—a proposal that some analysts warn could grant Russia several of its key war demands.
This plan has sparked intense backlash from several Republican lawmakers, who argue that Trump is considering concessions that would undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty. Despite the criticism, Trump remains adamant that current strategies are failing and insists the United States should stop “funding endless wars.”
Notably, while Trump has occasionally voiced disappointment in President Vladimir Putin—often in vague terms—he rarely condemns the Russian leader directly. Instead, he frequently shifts responsibility onto Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky or onto Biden, claiming that Russia only launched the invasion because “Sleepy Joe” was in office. In his Sunday post, Trump asserted that Putin saw Biden’s presidency as an opportunity, writing: “Putin thought ‘Now is my chance!’”
Ukraine, for its part, has repeatedly expressed gratitude for the extensive US military support it has received. President Zelensky has acknowledged American assistance in countless speeches and international forums, noting that US aid has played a crucial role in helping Ukrainian forces defend against Russia’s large-scale offensive.
Ukraine’s military is still engaged in intense fighting along a vast front line that stretches for hundreds of miles. American weapons, intelligence, and training remain key components of its defence strategy. Despite this, Trump insists that the gratitude shown has been insufficient—an accusation that many analysts see as politically motivated rather than reflective of reality.
The ongoing Geneva discussions aim to explore pathways toward a negotiated settlement. While Trump claims to support peace efforts, critics argue that his public statements undermine the diplomacy taking place behind closed doors. His rhetoric, particularly when directed at allies, risks destabilising the coalition that has supported Ukraine since the war began.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian toll continues to mount, with Russia’s invasion displacing millions and destroying entire cities. Any progress toward peace remains uncertain, and Trump’s unpredictable stance has added yet another layer of complexity to an already fragile geopolitical landscape.
