Njabulo Ndlovu (29), has pleaded guilty for three counts of murder and two counts of rape which he committed in Sobantu, Pietermaritzburg, last month.
Ndlovu appeared at the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday.
He pleaded guilty to brutally killing Zanele Ndlela (65), her daughter Simangele Ndlela (46) and an eight-year-old granddaughter, Zenande Ndlela, in their home in Sobantu.
Ndlovu further told the court that he raped Zenande two times and also strangled her.
The court room was packed with residents, relatives of the victims, and activists who were also joined by the KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza as well as ANC leaders from Moses Mabhida Region.
