This was the message from Police Minister Bheki Cele, who was speaking at the SAPS memorial site at the Union Buildings in Tshwane yesterday. “The killing of police members undermines our democracy,” he said. Being a cop is a calling, not a job.
Families, friends and colleagues gathered at the annual Commemoration Day to honour cops killed in the line of duty.
The names of the cops have been added to the wall of remembrance. National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole said cops are heroes and heroines who risk their lives for the people of South Africa.
“We call on communities and others to join hands in creating a safe environment that is conducive to social and economic stability and to assist in keeping police safe,” he said.
