FORMER Generations actor Thato Molamu is lending a helping hand to young people in Gauteng who want to work in television and film.
Three years ago, the actor and businessman, who stars on Mzansi Magic’s Lingashoni, started Leaders in Motion Academy (Lima) to mould young talent.
Through the academy, he is giving out 31 fully paid scholarships to unemployed youth and people living with disabilities.
Thato said the Seta accredited, one-year courses included a higher certificate in animation and visual effects, game design and production and digital film production. The courses will start in August.
“The pandemic is accelerating transformation in movie production, distribution and consumption. It is allowing us to rethink our skills and reinvent and upgrade ourselves.”
He said the academy aimed to bridge the gap between youth in urban areas who can afford to go to film school and those in kasis and rural areas who cannot afford expensive fees.
Thato told Daily Sun they hoped to extend the programme to other provinces and Africa. “Students can develop the skills to become filmmakers and drive their own future economic progress to enter the market, not only creatively, but also with a business acumen and understanding that drives the industry forward financially and culturally.”
He said the project came at a time when the industry suffered the devastation of Covid-19, but also the increasing demand of local production.
“While lockdown regulations have upended the global film industry, there has been a vacuum for locally produced content,” he said.
This year’s applications close on Thursday, 15 July and only 31 applicants will be enrolled.
