Telkom heads back to court over spectrum licensing

Telkom wants the High Court to review and set aside Icasa’s spectrum licensing invitation. Telkom has also applied for an urgent interdict to stop the processing of any applications in the meantime. The release of spectrum has been a contentious topic in South Africa.

It’s said to improve data connectivity and reduce data costs but it has been delayed for more than a decade because of court challenges.

At the peak of the pandemic, Icasa did release spectrum temporarily as more people were working and studying from home. In October last year, the regulator announced a new timetable for the auction of spectrum.

It was expected that companies would have access by March this year.
